Loan modification is becoming the top solution for homeowners facing home foreclosure. California and Orange County specifically have been hit very hard by foreclosure and homeowners dealing with an upside down mortgage.

In December 2008 there was a 45.4 percent jump in the notices of default in CA, the initial notice that a homeowner receives once they fail to pay their mortgage. The number of NODs in December 2008 was 32,948 compared to 22,665 in November 2008.

Foreclosure activity increased at a faster clip in Santa Clara County last year than in any other California county. Santa Clara Count foreclosure filings rose 239 percent from 2007 to 2008, according to a report from Default Research. A total of 18,610 properties in the county entered into some stage of foreclosure in 2008, said the company, up from 5,491 in 2007.

Stockton, CA topped the nation’s foreclosure list in 2007, and many other California cities were not far behind. California had the most foreclosures of any state. The Bay Area saw dramatic increases in foreclosures, and there are few signs that things are improving. The improvement is due in part to California Loan Modificaton programs that are helping CA homeowners stop foreclosure.
